Medical Student Internship VOLUNTEER TANZANIA
Volunteer Tanzania’s Vision
Volunteer Tanzania is committed towards helping communities within Tanzania to have the same opportunities as their developed counterparts. We sincerely believe we can achieve this at a grass roots level by having volunteers interact directly with local communities. Our hope is that our volunteers gain a better sense of their role within the global community by directly contributing their time and energy into these developing worlds. Volunteer Tanzania staff consists of former volunteers who have enjoyed the life-changing experiences we hope you will also gain by living and working in a new country. Because our staff live locally, we are able to keep costs low and our focus on local needs.
Code of Ethics
Although the goal of volunteering is to make a lasting impact on local communities, Volunteer Tanzania strongly believes that these impacts can be made in a responsible, respectful and ethical manner. We need to keep in mind that we are guests within these local communities and that we should be respectful of their customs and values. Part of the thrill of volunteering in a foreign country is the availability of intercultural exchange. You will have ample opportunities to interact with locals, exchange ideas and learn about the local culture. There is a fine line between imposing ideas and views, and teaching/educating and we highly discourage the former. As a result, we should be socially responsible and strive towards learning and respecting their culture as visitors of their country. Please be aware that Volunteer Tanzania does not discriminate among its volunteers based on their age, race, religion, physical ability, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or national origin. Sexual harassment is not tolerated and will be dealt with immediately. Volunteers who suffer sexual harassment must report it to their local coordinator immediately.
Impact
Our Organization is looking into addressing issues that affect social and economic development in Tanzania. Such a issues are directly related to UN Millennium Development goals. Issues such as lack of sufficient health services and facilities, Issues of environmental pollution and degradation, lack of proper provision of education, lack of enough water resources and provision, lack of qualified professionals to address different social and economic challenges.
So far we have had tremendous achievement by placing a good number of volunteers to our different social and economic development projects in Tanzania. Although it will take a while before some achievement can be seen, however some indication of our efforts are already seen in areas we place our volunteers, such indication includes improved conditions of schools and health centers, improved students performance and also improvement in general service provision in Tanzania.
The Program
Our International medical students internship program is designed to immerse medical students in the medical field, broaden their understanding of the various specialties, and validate their passion for this noble career path. It also gives students an opportunity to see how medicine is practiced in another part of the world like Tanzania and a greater appreciation for the global nature of the field.
The purpose of this internship program is to expose students who want to pursue a career in medicine to its realities before they become doctors. Students who have attended past programs have graduated the program with a better understanding of the hard work required to be successful and their passion and commitment confirmed. Students also come away with a greater appreciation Tanzania, and graduates of prior programs have returned to their host country as students, tourists, and volunteers. This type of exchange internship program also presents growth opportunities for the host hospital in that host universities are able to demonstrate what kind of programs and degrees they offer and expose students to their medical faculty and staff. In addition, the program enables host hospital to provide engagement opportunities between visiting and local students.
As part of this internship program, we would like students to rotate the following departments: 1) anatomy 2) surgery 3) the morgue. The other rotations could include shadowing physicians in any combination of other departments in the hospital, clinic, or offices such as orthopedics, gynecology & obstetrics, ER, pediatrics, etc. to support the anatomy lab rotation, which students will visit up to 2 times during their session. Volunteer Tanzania will arrange all other logistics outside of the university facilities, including transportation, overnight accommodations, food, and sightseeing activities. The opportunity to experience medicine in practice can be a life-changing experience for a future physician and provides the host hospital exposure to high-achieving, motivated international medical students.
This international medical student internship volunteer program is a very affordable way to spend a month or more in Tanzania, making great friends and having a profound impact on a host hospital with your peers. If you fundraise in good time, and make sure you are well informed on Tanzania and what to expect, you will have a unforgettable time and make memories and friends that will last a lifetime.

Past Volunteer Reviews
Martin C, United Kingdom. Volunteered in 2020
To sum it all up, it was a memorable and valuable experience, the rotation of work at the hospital was very nice; examination, scaling, fillings and extraction were among the activities we did. It was so nice to learn of the Tanzania dental clinic setup. Accommodation was very fine bedroom, food and bathrooms were all in good condition. Innocent our local coordinator is a very friendly and nice person. He helped us with almost everything and made our stay in Tanzania very comfortable. We also had a wonderful experience going for Safari and learning of the local culture.
Katie A, Australia. Volunteered in 2021
Loved my experience with VOLUNTEER TANZANIA. I got to help out in the emergency department, pediatric/male/female wards and the maternity department of the hospital. I witnessed/assisted with natural births, as well as witnessed c-sections in theatre. The people at the hospital were fabulous, as was Innocent and Angel (at the volunteer house). The food was excellent, as was the accommodation. Lots of activities to do in spare time, I went up to Arusha to do safaris, and Kilimanjaro, and spent a lot of time with coworkers at the hospital. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was getting the bus to and from work – if you can organise a driver then I would recommend doing that. I would do this experience again, without a shadow of a doubt, and highly recommend it!
Heidi L, Denmark. Volunteered in 2021
The people at VOLUNTEER TANZANIA are kind and helpful. My friends and I had a good time as K volunteers with Volunteer Tanzania. It was my very first trip to Africa, and I would definitely want to go back. It was my dream to one day work in Africa and in exact environment VOLUNTEER TANZANIAtook me. As a nurse student I had not only a learning experience but also a working one, although supervised but at times they would let me practice as a nurse and get that feeling of being registered and licensed nurse. The hospital is a very good place to learn and grow as a junior nurse from abroad. If you are looking to learning and get experience in a different environment outside your comfort zone, then Tanzania is a place to be. Cardinal Lugambwa Hospital introduced to almost everything I wished to experience.
Sarah W, USA. Volunteered in 2021
This trip is a life changing and it actually made me believe there is a whole other world outside the United States. Life is completing different in Dar Es Salaam, everything about it. The food, the people, traditions and overall dynamics are different from the USA. At the clinic the kinds were wonderful; they changed me in several aspects. Kids with their parents visited the clinic for treatment but to see them having fun with a big smile on their faces was just wonderful. I integrated with these kids and created a very strong bond and I am so grateful for that. Recording their vital sign like heart beat, temperature and taking their weight was just amazing. I strongly recommend this trip to anyone who likes to deal with kids in a child and maternal health department of a hospital.
